Dog Care
Some of the essential ingredients for a happy dog
As with any new pet arriving in its new home, it is best to have prepared in advance to help your new dog to settle in to its new environment.
Here are some items you will need for your new pet:
- Food and water dishes. There are many types and sizes available – the choice is yours. Remember to clean them thoroughly between meals.
- Food. Always check what food your dog is used to and continue the same diet. You can always change it gradually later if you want.
- Collar and lead. Ensure that your dog has a properly fitting collar before taking it for a walk so that it cannot slip its head out and run away if it gets a fright.
- Toys. Dogs love playing with toys but do check that the toys as not being chewed up and eaten - or you could end up with a very sick dog!!
Do remember to register your new dog with a local vet as soon as possible and always keep their vaccinations up to date. We would advise you to take out pet insurance as vet treatment can be very expensive.
Also check out local dog boarding establishments and be prepared to book up early with them especially during school holiday periods!
Take time to give your dog attention and groom him regularly. There is a lot of stress involved for him settling into a new routine and you may need a lot of patience and understanding to help him get into a new routine.
All the above information is really about using common sense. If in doubt about anything, please ask your vet or the local rescue centre for advice. After all, they are there to help.
