What to do if your pet gets lost
It is always a worrying time when your pet goes missing, but it is important that you stay calm. The chances are that your pet will turn up at home or be found very quickly. In the meantime you could be busy contacting the local agencies involved with animal welfare.
Many animals are now micro-chipped. This means that they have a small implant in the back of the neck which, when scanned, produces a numbered code unique to the dog or cat. When the animal is taken to an animal centre or vet it will be scanned and the owner will be contacted.
All dogs re-homed by us are micro-chipped before they leave the Home. We can also micro-chip your other dogs or cats for a small charge. Just ask our staff for more details.
Your pet should also have a disc on his or her collar with a contact telephone number. This way the person who finds your pet can call you to let you know where it is.
We suggest you take the following steps if you lose your pet:
- Contact the main receiving centre for stray dogs in your area.
- Contact your local Dog Warden service.
- Contact your local police station and report your loss.
- Check with vets in your area in case of an accident.
- Contact your local radio station; many will put out information on lost pets.
- Put an advert in the local paper.
- Put up flyers in local shops.
- Don't give up hope!
