Rehoming
Rehoming a Pet
Are you ready for the commitment?
Re-homing a pet requires a long-term commitment by you. Before you go ahead it requires a lot of careful thought by you and all the family. You should ask yourself the following questions:
-
Do you have the time to spend with your pet?
Dogs need to be walked – even in bad weather.
Dogs and cats need someone to pay attention to them and play with them. You need to spend time grooming and training them.
-
Can you afford the food, bedding and vet fees or pet insurance?
Find out from your re-homing centre what food the pet is used to and how much it costs. Any changes you make to their diet should be gradual to avoid any upset to the animal.
Vet fees can be very expensive and illnesses and accidents do and can happen to your pet when you least expect them. For your peace of mind, and to avoid large vet bills, we recommend that you take out pet insurance immediately and not wait until your pet needs treatment.
-
Will a new pet fit in with your existing circumstances and family life?
If you have children and other animals, you must consider how they will react to a new animal in the house.
If no-one is in the house during the day, is it really fair to take on a dog and then leave him alone for long periods of time in a strange environment?
Cats tend to be more independent than dogs and can be left alone for longer provided they have enough food and drink and access to a litter tray.
Kittens and puppies should not be left alone for long.
Decide if you want a large, medium or small dog or cat. If you live in a small house, a large, energetic dog may not be for you.
Would you like a pure bred or cross bred, long-haired or short-haired pet?
Would you like an old or young, male or female dog or cat?
Once you have considered the above and think you can offer an animal a home, please do come along and visit us. We have dogs and cats of all ages, sizes, shapes and temperaments. Ask our staff lots of questions and take your time. Don’t rush in and take the first dog or cat you see –remember you will have your new friend for a long time and you want to get it right! We will be more than happy for you to pay more than one visit to the Home to check out your new pet. Once you are sure – go for it. It’s a decision you won’t regret!
All our animals are checked over and vaccinated before they are re-homed and dogs are micro-chipped with your details in case they go missing in the future. Feel free to contact us for any advice you need after you take your new friend home. However, if unfortunately things don’t work out with your new dog or cat, for whatever reason, please contact us or return the pet to us so that we can find it an alternative home.
Do remember that every new pet will take several weeks to settle into their new home and a new routine, so be prepared to be patient with them. It will be worth it for the love they will give you in return.
