The Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home - Animal Shelter Donations

History
Edinburgh's oldest animal welfare organisation

The Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home is Edinburgh’s oldest Animal Welfare organisation, founded in 1883 by some citizens whose love of dogs motivated them to take action to alleviate the plight of strays roaming the streets of the city at that time.

Based for many years in Broughton Road in Edinburgh, the Home moved to its present site at Seafield on the banks of the Forth Estuary at Portobello in 1957.

In earlier times, the site was a boating pond, where a gentleman could take his young lady on a Sunday arriving there by tramcar. A far cry from the busy road it is today!

Following major building work over many years, the Home has continued to expand and improve the range of services provided until we have become one of the most modern well-equipped animal welfare homes in Great Britain today.
