Thousands of visitors ‘Paws by the Prom’ for our Open Day!
On Sunday 2 September Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home saw thousands of supporters attend our Open Day, Paws by the Prom. Over 1700 people were counted coming through the Home’s gates for the special event, in addition to hundreds of dogs.
Pet lovers had lots to see and do at the dog-friendly event, as they enjoyed demonstrations from Cani-Cross and K9 Zoom Agility, as well as meeting some of our own wonderful dogs who were brought up to our Main Arena. Visitors had the chance to get up close and personal with other dogs and cats looking for their forever homes, by touring the kennels and cattery and speaking to our staff at the Rehoming Trailer.
Families enjoyed fun and games including funfair stalls, meeting our mascot Hamish, and a visit from the Marionville Red Watch Fire & Rescue Service. In the fun zone, our younger visitors were treated to games like hook-a-duck, beat the goalie, and our cold wet sponge toss – which was welcomed on what turned out to be a scorching day at Seafield!
Food and refreshments were offered by The Pizza Pitch, Bonnie Burrito, Sly Fox Foods, The Caravan of Courage and Prague Shack. Let’s not forget those with a sweet tooth - there were treats in our fun zone, with Mr Donut Man, Aloha Shave Ice and S Luca's keeping the crowds happy all day.
The event was supported by 32 much-valued volunteers, in addition to stallholders from across Scotland. Forth One Presenter and Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home Animal Champion, Micky Gavin, lent his MC skills to the event and kept the crowds going all day. Speaking about why he volunteered to help the Home, he said:
“I’ve been a supporter of the Home for a long time, and I’m honoured to be one of their Animal Champions. It is such a great experience helping them host their annual Open Day and bring in vital funds for the amazing work they do!”
The event was also visited by Christine Grahame MSP, who is another amazing Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home Animal Champion, who happily judged our ‘Handsomest Boy’ and ‘Prettiest Girl’ Dog Competitions on the day.
Our brand-new cat competition got off to a purr-fect start, with over 60 fluffy felines being entered into categories such as Best Rescue, Best Grumpy Cat Impression, and Best in Show.
Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home’s mission is to rescue, reunite and rehome Edinburgh’s lost and abandoned dogs and cats, caring for an average of 4,000 pets every year. Thousands of pounds were raised at the event, which will directly benefit the Home’s furry residents.
Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home sends its genuine thanks to all those who visited and supported the event and helped to make it a record success!
