Portobello Shop Marks 25th Anniversary

03/07/2018

The Friends of Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home mark a special anniversary this week as they celebrate 25 years since their shop on Portobello High Street opened its doors.

‘The Friends’, as they are affectionately known by Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, are a voluntary group who run the Portobello shop and donate the proceeds to the Home to support the care of stray and unwanted dogs and cats across Edinburgh and the Lothians. In 2017 alone, the group donated £55,000 to the Home.

25 years ago the Home bought and fitted out the shop at 91 Portobello High Street, which was then taken on and managed by the Friends of Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home.  On 5 July 1993 the shop opened its doors, and it prospered it outgrew its premises. In 2002 the shop was moved to the current location of 104 Portobello High Street.

The Friends have benefitted from the long-term commitment of many of its members, who have been working with the Friends for 25 years. These include Maureen Mutch, Jeanette Gibb, May Brown and Pat Ballantyne. Pat did her first shift at the Portobello Shop in its first week of opening and has been on duty every Thursday morning ever since.

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home wishes the Friends a very happy anniversary and offers its sincere thanks to all who have shown such dedication to fundraising on its behalf over the last 3 decades.
